Mitsubishi Delica Mini

2026-10-02 02:40:01

The Mitsubishi Delica Mini (often referred to in Chinese as the "Mini Delica") is a kei super height wagon under Mitsubishi Motors' Delica series. The first-generation model debuted in May 2023, quickly establishing itself as a popular hit in Japan's kei car market courtesy of its distinctive styling and exceptional practicality. On 29 October 2025, the second-generation Delica Mini was officially launched in Japan. The model remains exclusive to the Japanese domestic market and has not been officially introduced to mainland China.

Model Overview

The Delica Mini is positioned as a kei (K-Car) SUV-style wagon, standing as the most compact member of the Delica family. Its core appeal lies in blending the Delica series' iconic rugged, go-anywhere styling with the compact footprint and practical space of a kei car. Developed around the concept of "Advanced Active Reliable Partner", the new model aims to strengthen its presence in the kei super height wagon segment. Prices for the second-generation model range from approximately 1.95 million to 2.95 million yen (tax inclusive), which translates to around RM100,000 to RM150,000.

In terms of dimensions, the Delica Mini measures 3,395 mm long, 1,475 mm wide, and 1,785–1,815 mm tall (1,800–1,830 mm with roof rails), riding on a 2,495 mm wheelbase. Kerb weight ranges between 970 kg and 1,060 kg.

Design Language

The exterior styling of the second-generation Delica Mini represents a comprehensive evolution of its predecessor's signature "rugged yet cute" design language. Conceived under the "Daily Adventure #2" theme, the styling revolves around key elements of rugged gear aesthetics, a sense of security, and approachable appeal. Up front, it sports enlarged semi-circular LED daytime running lights that lend it an expressive, wide-eyed look, accompanied by a redesigned front grille and a wider silver skid plate underneath. The A-pillars are positioned more upright and pushed forward by 115 mm, improving forward-diagonal visibility while creating an airier cabin feel. At the rear, high-mounted block-style LED tail lights flank a tailgate with prominent "DELICA" lettering. Black wheel arch cladding extends seamlessly into the side doors to reinforce its rugged SUV stance, while the alloy wheel design takes inspiration from the cleated soles of outdoor trekking boots. Buyers can choose from 15 exterior colour options, comprising 9 monotone and 6 dual-tone schemes, including newly introduced shades such as Desert Beige Pearl and Denim Blue Pearl.

Inside, the cabin adopts a clean horizontal dashboard layout guided by the "Daily Adventure" concept. The cockpit integrates a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster with a 12.3-inch central infotainment touchscreen, delivering a seamless, driver-centric interface. The multimedia system features built-in Google services and supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity. A new beige interior colour scheme is now available, complemented by premium seat upholstery. The newly sculpted front seats offer enhanced lateral support, while the rear seat contours have been refined for improved passenger comfort.

Powertrain & Performance

The Delica Mini is powered by a BR06 659 cc inline three-cylinder petrol engine available in two states of tune. The naturally aspirated version produces 52 PS (38 kW) and 60 Nm of torque, while the turbocharged variant churns out 64 PS (47 kW) and 100 Nm. Both engines are paired with a CVT automatic gearbox across the range. Drivetrain options include front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD), fed by a 27-litre fuel tank.

Chassis & Handling

The Delica Mini is built on a monocoque chassis commonly found in kei cars. Suspension duties are handled by "Prosmooth" dampers co-developed by Mitsubishi and KYB, engineered to deliver a supple ride and stable handling. Shock absorbers on 4WD variants receive dedicated bespoke tuning.

The vehicle is also equipped with Mitsubishi's proprietary Grip Control system, which aids traction when moving off and driving at low speeds on slippery surfaces. Drivers can toggle between five selectable drive modes: Power, Normal, Eco, Gravel, and Snow. Hill Descent Control comes fitted as standard. In terms of wheel options, 2WD models ride on 14-inch or 15-inch wheels, while 4WD models come standard with 15-inch alloys shod in 165/60 R15 tyres.

Cabin & Practicality

Practicality and everyday convenience take centre stage inside the Delica Mini. Dual powered sliding doors ensure effortless ingress and egress in tight parking spots. The cabin is upholstered in water-repellent and stain-resistant fabric, with the boot area receiving similarly durable, easy-to-clean trim. Cleverly designed cup holders for the front occupants keep tall bottles and canned drinks firmly in place. Additionally, a factory welfare (accessible) variant is offered with a powered swivel and lift-out front passenger seat to assist wheelchair users.

Safety & Driver Assistance

On the safety front, the Delica Mini comes comprehensively equipped with advanced active safety systems. The vehicle features the Mitsubishi e-Assist active safety suite as standard, packing Adaptive LED Headlights (with automatic high beam), Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition, Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), and Intersection Collision Avoidance Assist (capable of detecting pedestrians, oncoming vehicles, and crossing traffic). For parking ease, a 3D Multi-Around View Monitor is included, offering an "under-floor transparent view" beneath the bonnet as well as a "front-nose panoramic view" to eliminate blind spots.

Market Performance & Reception

The Delica Mini has proven to be a resounding success in the Japanese market. In its first year on sale, the first-generation model notched 44,000 units, with cumulative bookings exceeding 50,000 units. Its monthly sales figures averaged nearly four times that of its predecessor, the eK Cross Space. Notably, 51% of buyers opted for AWD models, with range-topping variants accounting for a staggering 90% of total bookings. Pre-orders for the second-generation model opened on 22 August 2025, breaching the 10,000-unit milestone just prior to its official showroom launch.

Motoring media reviews have lauded the Delica Mini for carving out a distinct niche in the kei super height wagon segment with its "rugged yet cute" styling, SUV-inspired demeanour, and versatile practicality. The punchy output of its turbocharged powerplant has also been praised for outperforming several rivals in its class. Blending the adventurous Delica pedigree with the sheer usability of a kei car, the Delica Mini continues to command strong appeal in Japan's competitive automotive landscape.
